After graduating from Clark High School, Ullyot attended The University of South Dakota in 1927. He spent the next two years at the university, where Professor William Purdee introduced him to organic chemistry.

Ullyot went on to receive his bachelor's degree from the University of Minnesota and his doctorate from the University of Illinois. It was from his experiences at USD that he hopes future students can pursue their dreams.
