Teeners open 2001 season with 14-1 loss against Irene The Vermillion Teeners baseball team traveled to Irene on Wednesday, June 13 for their first game of the season which had been delayed by weather, camps, vacations, etc., for a couple weeks.
With an unprepared team for game competition, the outcome of the confrontation was probably to be expected.
Irene's pitcher, A. Gale, effectively stopped the Vermillion bats, registering 10 strikeouts while walking one. As the home team built a 6-1 lead after three innings, the Vermillion Teeners suffered the ignominious fate of having eight runs scored against them (without the aid of a hit) when five walks, a hit batsman, and two errors sealed their fate and sent them home with a four inning 14-1 loss.
The visitors were held to one run on one hit with six errors as Irene had 14 runs on five hits, committing no errors.
The Vermillion offense consisted of Brad Schaack scoring on a base hit by Carl Thompson. Schaack was the starter and the loss was charged against him. He was relieved by Paul Hugo and Matt Kellsen.
The Teener team faced Elk Point at Prentis Park on Saturday, June 16.
