Three-game tourney keeps Teeners busy The Vermillion Teeners baseball team had a busy, if not too successful, weekend June 22-23 as they were involved in three games at the baseball complex in Yankton.
Their first game was against the Yankton Lakers Teeners, and after suffering early tournament jitters, Vermillion fell by a 10-2 time-shortened, six-inning decision.
Line scores: Yankton 10 runs, 8 hits, 1 error; Vermillion 2 runs, 6 hits, 3 errors.
The Lakers' pitcher, Sean Fresk, effectively stopped the Vermillion bats, registering 10 strikeouts while walking five. As the home team built a 5-1 lead after two innings, the Vermillion Teeners could muster only one more run as they left nine men on base during the remaining time.
Jeremy Yankton pitched the complete six-inning game and was charged with the loss. He also scored one of Vermillion's runs.
The Vermillion offense consisted of Adam Brunick scoring on a base hit by Andrew Ofstehage, and Jared Burcham, Brunick, Tyler Brown and Carl Thompson each had a hit.
At Lakeview Park on Saturday, Watertown was a worthy adversary in the second tournament game as Vermillion was held to two hits when pitcher Matt Blais struck out four batters, walked one and hit a batter in his four-inning stint.
Brown went three innings, giving up eight runs on seven hits and was charged with the loss. Thompson pitched the final inning, surrendering the two runs that invoked the 10-run rule. The only Vermillion hits were registered by Burcham and Brunick.
Game three in the tourney sent Dakota Valley against the Teeners with a hope that Vermillion's fortunes would be turned around. Unfortunately, Dakota Valley made the key plays and necessary hits to outscore Vermillion 8-4. The time constraint imposed by tournament rules stopped the game before the complete scheduled game could be played.
Line scores: Dakota Valley 8 runs, 3 hits, 5 errors; Vermillion 4 runs, 8 hits, 5 errors.
Offensively, Burcham went three for four and scored two runs. Brunick was two for three, scored once and had one RBI. Ryan Mockler scored the other run, and Ofstehage had one RBI. Danny Gilbertson was on base three times on a walk and two single hits.
Thompson started and gave up three runs in two innings. Brunick pitched the remaining four innings, allowing five runs. The two pitchers combined for 10 strike-outs.
The Teeners' season record now is 1-6 and they are scheduled for games in Wagner, Alcester and Salem on June 26, 27, and 29. They will play Dakota Valley in Prentis Park at 6:30 p.m. on Saturday, June 30.
