USD names six captains for '01 football season Six student athletes have been named captains for the 2001 University of South Dakota football team.
The student athletes were selected in a vote of their teammates following spring ball this season. The captains for the 2001 season will include:
Mark Blackburn, senior, linebacker, Moreno Valley, CA; Josh Burr, senior, offensive tackle, Lancaster, WI; Korey Ebel, junior, linebacker, Hartley, IA; Ryan Garry, senior, fullback, Humboldt; Bill Gassen, junior, nose tackle, Rapid City; Ryan Justice, junior, quarterback, Ankeny, IA.
"These are outstanding individuals that will provide important leadership to our team during the 2001 season," said Coyote head football coach John Austin.
In 2000, the Coyotes recorded an 8-3 record, including 6-3 in the North Central Conference. The Coyotes finished third in the NCC. It was their best record since the 1995 team recorded an 8-3 mark.
Blackburn, a recreation major, is the son of Mark and Wanda Blackburn. Burr is the son of Allan and Pam Burr. He is a mathematics major. Ebel, a health, physical education and recreation major, is the son of Dennis and Connie Ebel. Garry, a biology major, is the son of Stan and Mary Garry. Gassen, a criminal justice major, is the son of Matt and Charlene Gassen. Justice, a criminal justice major, is the son of Steve Justice and Tish Justice.
