Vermillion Babe Ruth team tops Yankton 14-9 When Vermillion's Post #1 Legion team had a scheduled game cancelled, it gave me the opportunity to take in a game with the Babe Ruth League team, made up of Vermillion Middle School players, against Yankton at Prentis Park on Monday, June 18.
The 15-member team is coached by Cullen Iverson and Todd Anderson and sports a 2-4 season record after their victory over Yankton's Babe Ruth team.
Ben Oberle was the starting pitcher and went through six innings striking out seven, walking 13, allowing five runs on four hits. He was relieved at the start of the last inning by Jason Donald who gave up a hit and two walks, followed by an error by the first baseman. This caused the coach to bring in Kyle Mollet, who was able to weather the storm and shut down the rally with only those four runners, charged to Donald, scoring.
Mollet did give up a couple walks and there was also an error, but he retired the final two batters with the bases loaded.
Line scores: Vermillion 14 runs, 5 hits, 3 errors; Yankton 9 runs, 5 hits, 3 errors.
All 14 of the Vermillion players in attendance had the chance to have "at bats." Scoring two runs in the game were Kyle Hubert who was one for two and had an RBI; Troy Manning; and Ben Rogge. Josh Boomgarden went one for three, scored a run and drove in two. Steve Foltz scored once in one for two at bats, as did Cody Hayes. Brandon Hansen went one for two with one RBI. Jason Donald had two RBI.
This was the second home win for the young team. They will be on the road for the remaining games on their schedule.
