Vermillion Post #1 baseball team splits doubleheader

Vermillion Post #1 baseball team splits doubleheader Baseball season is under way for Vermillion's Post #1 team, who split a double header at South Sioux City, NE on Sunday, June 3.

In the first game played at the South Sioux sports complex, Tim Brodersen pitched a three-hit, no run gem of a game, striking out five, walking four, and having only one error backing him up.

His credited win made it three victories in a row for the Vermillion Post #1 team.

It was not an easy contest, as South Sioux's L. Bird held the visitors to only four hits, striking out seven and walking two. His teammates committed four fielding errors (three in the fifth inning) when three singles and a base-on-balls were enough for Post #1 to score three runs.

Line score: Vermillion 3 runs, 4 hits, one error; South Sioux 0 runs, 3 hits, 4 errors.

Tyler Vacek went one for three with one run scored and two RBI. Brodersen was two for three and drove in the third run. Dan Holoch had the other hit and Adam Brooks and Pat Brooks each scored one run.

In the second game, Vermillion had eight hits while striking out five times, leaving eight runners on base. They still scored six runs in a lopsided scoring binge by SSC 17 runs, six in the first inning and six in the final inning plus a four-run second.

"The fourth game in two days left our pitching staff pretty decimated," said coach Jason Gault. "Our roster of players was a little thin, too."

Line score: SSC 17 runs, 7 hits, 0 errors; Vermillion 6 runs, 8 hits, 2 errors

Ten bases-on-balls were a direct cause of the multiple scores for South Sioux.

Offensive stats for Post #1 included one hit by each of eight starters. Pat Brooks was one for one with one run scored and one RBI. Brodersen scored one run. Brett Mockler had two RBI and BJ Campbell scored one and drove in one. Dan Tolsma went one for two with two runs scored. Holoch scored one run and Drew Lawrence drove in the other run.

With a 3-1 record the team was scheduled to play at Prentis Park on Tuesday, June 5 against Beresford, and will play in a tournament Friday through Sunday June 8-10 at Hastings, NE.
