Grey Sox victorious for two, lose one last week Last week was a busy one for the Vermillion Grey Sox, as they followed up a loss to Lennox S&D Flooring with two straight wins.
On Thursday, one of the perennial powerhouse teams, Lennox S&D Flooring, came calling to Prentis Park and downed the Grey Sox 18-6. The game ended after eight innings via the mercy rule.
Dave Holoch blasted a three-run homer to lead the Grey Sox at the plate. Jason Madsen slapped out three hits and scored twice.
Sunday was a doubleheader for the Grey Sox. First up was the Dakota Valley Saints. In a tight contest, the Grey Sox prevailed 4-3. Steve Varnes had two doubles and a triple to spark the offense.
Holoch doubled, reached on an error, and scored twice. Ryan Baedke got the win for the Grey Sox.
Next up for the Grey Sox was the Sioux City Giants. Vermillion took a 5-2 lead into the seventh inning. Rusty Jensen was cruising along on the mound.
The Giants pushed three runs across in the seventh, then added one more in the eighth to take a 6-5 lead heading into the final frame.
The Grey Sox got a runner on base with two outs as Nick Mayer drew a walk. Baedke followed with a double, and Holoch walked to load the bases for Mark Clark. The veteran slugger delivered a clutch single that brought home two runs, and Vermillion won 7-6.
With the victory, the Grey Sox improve their record to 7-9.
Their next game is Sunday, July 15, at Beresford. Then they play at Elk Point on Wednesday, July 18, and then host the Sioux City Giants on Thursday, July 19. All of the games will start at 7:30 p.m.
