Mitchell Legion team victorious over Post #1 The Vermillion Post #1 Legion team faced off with the "A" Mitchell Post #18 in a doubleheader played Monday, July 2 at Prentis Park.
The first game was tightly pitched by both teams and the result was in doubt right up to the end of the conflict.
Drew Lawrence was the starter for Vermillion, giving up five runs on six hits while registering seven strike outs, walking five, and was charged with the loss.
Mitchell's pitcher Travis Kaiser held the home team to four runs on four hits while striking out eight batters and walking two. He earned credit for the win.
Vermillion took a two-run lead in the first inning, and Mitchell caught up for a tie after five innings. A two-run sixth coming from three consecutive singles gave the visitors a 2-point advantage and a run in the seventh made it difficult for Post #1 to catch up in the last inning. But they made a valiant effort, scoring two runs and leaving runners on second and third when the final two batters hit long fly balls deep to the outfield which were caught and snuffed out the comeback effort.
Line scores: Mitchell Post #18 5 runs, 6 hits, 2 errors; Vermillion Post #1 4 runs, 4 hits, 1 error.
The offense consisted of single runs scored by Tyler Vacek, Tim Brodersen, BJ Campbell and Jeff Gilbertson. Brett Mockler had two RBI, and Eric Rickord and Vacek each had one RBI.
Game #2 was another competition you wouldn't want to write home about. Vermillion's bats were silenced to the tune of two hits and no runs as Mitchell pounded the ball mercilessly, accumulating 16 runs in a shortened four-inning contest.
Line scores: Vermillion 0 runs, 2 hits, 5 errors; Mitchell 16 runs, 9 hits, 0 errors.
Three Vermillion pitchers were "used up" in the beating Danny Holoch, Campbell, and Drew Lawrence.
There are better games ahead and the competition will probably not be the same calibre as Mitchell.
The double loss leaves Post #1 at 14 wins, nine losses for the season record so far.
