Post #1 squeaks by Alcester with 14-9 victory on June 29 The Vermillion Legion Post #1 baseball team, sparked by the great relief pitching performance of Ryan Nelson, had a shaky 14-9 victory over the Alcester Legion team as they played a return engagement there on Friday, June 29.
Adam Brooks started and pitched 6 1/3 innings, giving up nine runs on nine hits. He was charged with three runs over the first five innings, while Post #1 accumulated 10 runs for a comfortable lead.
But after an error to start the bottom of the sixth, three straight singles and a couple of walks, he could only register one out as six runs crossed the plate.
Nelson came in to relieve and got the final two outs of the inning, then struck out the side in the seventh and retired the batters 1-2-3 in each of the final two innings, getting credit for a save. Adam Brooks got the win.
Line scores: Vermillion � 14 runs, 16 hits, 3 errors; Alcester � 9 runs, 9 hits, 3 errors.
The offense was led by Pat Brooks who led off the game with a homer, was three for five batting and had two RBI. Tyler Vacek went two for five, driving in one. Eric Rickord was two for four, scoring two runs, as did Jeff Gilbertson.
Nelson was on base four times without benefit of a hit, but scored three runs. Brett Mockler went two for five, scoring two runs and an RBI, and Danny Holoch scored one run on one for three at-bats, and one RBI. Tim Brodersen had two for six at-bats, scoring two.
The season record stands at 14-7 going into a doubleheader on Monday, July 2.
