Vermillion couple begins Mount Marty scholarship Mount Marty College, Yankton, will offer the Lucille Kribell O'Connor Scholarship to its students for the first time in the fall of 2001.
The new scholarship has been made possible through the generosity and vision of Lucille and Howard O'Connor of Vermillion.
Mount Marty College is familiar ground to the O'Connors. Mrs. O'Connor and all of her sisters graduated from Mount Marty College.
"There were six of us girls, and we all went to Mount Marty," she said. "I was 14 the first time my sister Mildred and I left home to stay at the school. Mildred and I were so close that when she started first grade, I cried all day while she was gone. My parents held her back so we would be in the same grade. So when we went away to Mount Marty College, we were together."
The O'Connors established the scholarship for a variety of reasons. The mission and vision of the Benedictine Sisters for Mount Marty College were important in making the decision. Mrs. O'Connor believes the connection between the monastery and the college has had a lasting impact on her life.
"We not only learned through our studies, but learned how important it is to help others, to get along with others. While we learned our lessons, we learned a way of life that I don't think you find just anyplace," she said.
It is the hope of the O'Connors that the scholarship will enable students to attend Mount Marty College.
"I would love to see someone who wants to work hard and learn be able to use this scholarship," Mrs. O'Connor said. "My parents made great sacrifices so their children could have an education. I am so pleased to be able to offer that opportunity to someone who's interested in attending Mount Marty. What you learn here stays with you for a lifetime."
