Vermillion hosts softball tourney The Vermillion Girls Softball Association hosted the Dakota Fastpitch League Tournament July 7 and 8 in Vermillion at the USD/Vermillion Softball Complex.
Nineteen league teams competed in three different age divisions in the double elimination tournament. The Dakota Fastpitch League is comprised of teams from six area communities that play a weekly schedule.
Vermillion Beauty Shop won the U12 trophy after defeating Yankton/Stotz in two consecutive games. Vermillion Beauty, coached by Randy Isaacson, Angie Bjorkman and Brian Begley, won their opener over Elk Point 10-3 and then dropped a second round game to Stotz 14-13.
They then fought back through the loser's bracket and handed Stotz its first loss 7-6. In the title game the Vermillion squad defeated Stotz 12-4.
Wells Fargo of Vermillion also competed in the U12 division. The squad lost an opening round game to Stotz and was then eliminated in the second round with a tough loss to Elk Point. Janice Alswager coaches the squad.
In the U14 division, M & P of Yankton defeated Ehresman Engineering of Yankton for the league title 7-4. Ehresman had handed M & P its first loss of the tournament in the title game 10-6 forcing a second contest in the double elimination format.
Due to threatening weather, the two Yankton squads completed the tournament in Yankton late Sunday afternoon.
O'Connor Construction of Vermillion advanced to the semifinal game before falling to Ehresman Engineering 9-7. O'Connor opened with a win over Elk Point #2 16-4 and followed with a second round win over Elk Point #1 9-3.
The Vermillion club then lost a third round game to M & P Transport of Yankton 8-3. Lanny Walker and Melissa O'Connor coach O'Connor Construction.
Two other Vermillion U14 teams competed in he tournament. Community First fell in the opening game to M & P Transport 15-3. It then lost its second game to Gayville-Volin in a well-played 14-11 game. Elizabeth Harder coaches the squad. Vermillion Dairy Queen, coached by Steve Gerth, lost its opener to Elk Point #1 16-4. Elk Point #2 then eliminated the team in its second game.
Yankton Riteway won the U16 title with a perfect 3-0 record. Jones Food/Ace Hardware of Vermillion advanced to the title game but lost to Riteway 11-3.
The Jones/Ace team, coached by Matt Brandhagen and Lauren Tolsma, opened with 14-0 win over Wakonda. It won a second round game over Yankton River City 16-3.
In the third round Jones/Ace lost to Riteway 14-4 and moved into the loser's bracket where it notched a win over Gayville-Volin 14-2, setting up a rematch with Riteway in the title game.
Five Vermillion squads will compete in the South Dakota State Softball Tournament July 13-15 in Sioux Falls. Over 400 teams are entered in the tournament scheduled for the Sherman Park Softball complex. Vermillion has squads entered in the U12, U14 and U16 divisions.
