Yankton children’s choir schedules Aug. 4 auditions

Yankton children's choir schedules Aug. 4 auditions Last call for auditions for the ninth season of the Yankton Children's Choir!

All third- through eighthgraders with unchanged voices boys and girls are encouraged to try out for the Preparatory Choir and Concert Choir.

One date for auditions remains: Saturday, Aug. 4, 9 a.m. to noon. They are being held at the United Church of Christ-Congregational, 5th and Walnut, in Yankton, through the cooperation of the J. Laiten Weed Fund. Please use the northeast glass doors, off the library parking lot.

All auditions are on a first come, first served basis. Singers must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. During the audition time, there will be an opportunity to ask questions and clarify expectations.

Singers will be tested for their vocal range and on their ability to remember melodies. They'll also be asked to sing My Country 'Tis of Thee unaccompanied, and to participate in singing a familiar round.

Rehearsals for this season's Yankton Children's Choir will begin Monday, Sept. 10 and continue weekly through May.

Last year's choir members represented 10 South Dakota and Nebraska communities: Crofton, Hartington, Mission Hill, Osmond, Springfield, Utica, Vermillion, Wagner, Wynot and Yankton.

In previous seasons, the Yankton Children's Choir has performed at Mount Rushmore, appeared in a television commercial, and sung the National Anthem at a Minnesota Twins baseball game. The choir has also presented world premieres of five pieces of music especially commissioned for the ensemble.

Tuition is charged for participation in the choir, but choral director, Lea Ann Schramm said "We don't want any interested young person to be afraid to audition because of financial concerns. Scholarship help and time payment plans are available, so everyone who wants to try out certainly should."

Those with questions about auditions or the upcoming season should contact Schramm (605/665-4394, lschramm@dtgnet.com); Margaret Lyons (605/665-9337, lyons808@byelectric.com; or Patty Stuelpnagel (605/664-2007, vpstue @dtgnet.com).
