Post #1 wins third round state tournament contest The losers' bracket in the South Dakota Class B American Legion Baseball Tournament sent two more teams to the sidelines as Southern Hills eliminated Platte/Geddes 7-5 in 11 innings, and Vermillion overwhelmed Miller/Wessington Springs 18-10.
Also, in a late game, Milbank outscored Groton to become the only undefeated team after three days of competition.
The semifinal games put Vermillion up against Groton and Southern Hills faced Milbank in the next round.
The Post #1 vs. Miller/Wessington Springs Post #38/110 started out with Vermillion scoring two runs in the top of the first, and M/W tying the score in the same inning. Things looked a little bleak when Post #1 fell behind 8-2 after four as starting pitcher Drew Lawrence gave up 10 hits and suffered the results of six team fielding errors.
After a serious dressing down by the coach, Vermillion came alive and led by four hits started by Ryan Nelson, then Adam Brooks, followed by Danny Holoch and ending with Eric Rickord. The situation was helped by a couple hit batters and a second Nelson hit. The team scored seven runs to take the lead 9-8.
Miller scored a run in the bottom of the fifth against the starter and that brought in Holoch who shut down the opposing batters, effectively holding them scoreless, giving up only one hit during his four-inning stint. His teammates continued their onslaught, scoring nine runs on nine hits to assure the tenuous laugher win 18-10.
Vermillion made good use of the five errors by M/W , scoring five unearned runs. The other 13 runs were earned as Nelson was credited with two RBI, four for seven batting, and two runs scored.
Tyler Vacek had three doubles for five trips to the plate, scored four runs and had one RBI. Tim Brodersen was three for five, drove in four and scored once. Brett Mockler scored twice on three for five batting, and had three RBI.
Two runs each were scored by Rickord and Holoch, while Pat Brooks scored three times from his lead-off position. Jeff Gilbertson and Adam Brooks completed the scoring with one run each.
Holoch was the winning pitcher in relief and Brodersen closed out the game by pitching the final inning.
