Tanagers suffer loss in season-opening play by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Rough Riders 65-42 in girls' basketball Aug. 21 at Sioux Falls after being buried by a disastrous first half.
The season-opening loss gave the Vermillion varsity a record of 0-1 while Roosevelt moved to 1-0.
Ashley Bjorkman scored 15 points.
"Ashley had to earn her points Tuesday as she faced some tough defense," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanagers trailed 18-9 at the end of the first period, trailed 39-17 after the second period, and then trailed 54-29 going into the final period.
The Rough Riders ended up hot from three-point range, canning 5 of 10 from long distance.
"I thought we competed well, but I was disappointed with our rebounding and hustle with loose balls," said coach Luitjens. "Overall, considering we played a team with 88 wins in a row for our first game, we did a decent job offensively with much room for improvement."
The Vermillion varsity connected on 13 of 27 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 14 of 37 from the field, while Roosevelt was 24 of 50 from the field. The Rough Riders hit 12 of 18 free throw attempts.
The Vermillion varsity was out-rebounded 35-22.
Even with the final margin, the Tanagers had some solid individual efforts.
"I really thought Annie Carlson played well off the bench," coach Luitjens said. "She played with confidence."
