Three charged for car theft, felony vandalism by M. Jill Karolevitz Two juveniles and one adult will be charged in connection with vehicle theft and other incidents that occurred Aug. 12 near Vermillion.
The juveniles will be charged as adults.
"Three kids stole an Explorer in Sioux City and it broke down outside of Vermillion," said Clay County Deputy Andy Howe. "Then they vandalized it breaking out the windows and walked to Bruce Mockler's residence, where they stole his vehicle."
Mockler, who lives about a mile east of Vermillion on Highway 50, heard a suspicious noise and discovered that the suspects had backed out of his garage, in his 1996 Ford Explorer, without opening the door. He called the sheriff's department at 5:44 a.m.
While Clay County Deputy Jerami West took the Mockler report, a Union County deputy was in pursuit of the vehicle, which eventually ended up back in Clay County, where the driver lost control and rolled the Explorer at 313th St. and 470th Ave., near the Akron exit on the Clay-Union County line, Howe said.
Robert Henry Jr., 17, Macy, NE, remains in a Sioux Falls hospital and will be arrested following his release, Howe said. Anthony Grant, 17, Walthill, NE, was released from the hospital and is now in custody at the Clay County Jail. Levi Hamilton, 20, Sioux City, IA, remains at large. A warrant has been issued for his arrest.
Charges in Clay County range from grand theft and felony intentional damage to property. Other charges are pending in Union County. Howe added that the accident is still under investigation.
