Vermillion man dies in one-car rollover Aug. 13 by M. Jill Karolevitz A one-car rollover Aug. 13 resulted in the death of a Vermillion man.
Joshua Schroeder, 18, Vermillion, lost control of the 1991 Pontiac Bonneville he was driving sometime after midnight, according to Clay County Sheriff's Deputy Andy Howe. The vehicle rolled into a ditch and came to rest in a cornfield. Schroeder was ejected "and killed at the scene," Howe said. A 16-year-old female passenger from Vermillion was injured in the accident.
"She was transported by helicopter to Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City," Howe said. "She had a broken arm and a concussion."
Schroeder was driving north on 464th Ave., a gravel road, near the University Road "S" curve when the accident occurred.
"I don't know how they lost control, but it appears they were speeding," Howe said. Schroeder was not wearing a seat belt.
A passing motorist discovered the crash and called it in at about 7:41 a.m. The passenger was not in the vehicle when emergency personnel arrived, "but it's not clear whether she had been thrown out or just got out after the accident," Howe said. "A lot of hours had gone by between the accident and the emergency call."
