Works by Phyllis W. Packard initiate arts council season The Vermillion Area Arts Council announces that the works of artist Phyllis W. Packard, longtime Vermillion community member, will be featured as the first show of the gallery season.
"The Prairie Islands Exhibition" features weaving and watercolors. An opening public reception for the artist will be held from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m., Sept. 15, following the arts council's annual meeting at 7 p.m.
Currently the solid waste director for the city of Vermillion, Packard received her bachelor of fine arts degree from Syracuse University and her master's in public administration from The University of South Dakota.
She has taught fiber arts, clay, design painting, art history, art appreciation and arts education at USD, Yankton College and Worthington Community College. She has been a member of the arts council for over 20 years and served as president for 10 years.
Packard has been an artist for 12 years with the South Dakota Arts Council's Artist-in-the-Schools program where she led 75 fiber arts residencies. She has participated in over 150 one-artist and group exhibitions.
The exhibit will be displayed through Oct. 17 at the Washington Street Arts Center, 202 Washington Street and may be viewed by appointment; call Laurie Johns at 605-624-6973. Everyone is invited to the annual meeting and to the reception.
