First quarter blitz ignites Tanager win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers hammered the Canton C-Hawks 57-27 in girls' basketball Sept. 11 at home in a win ignited by a first-quarter blitz.

"Tessa Tuetken scored 13 points, and contributed with four steals and four assists," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens.

The Tanagers committed only nine turnovers while forcing 26.

The Tanagers took the lead 20-5 after the first quarter, and margins of 15-9 and 16-8 in the second and third quarters boosted the lead to 51-22 going into the final period.

The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 4-2, while Canton dropped to 0-6.

The Vermillion varsity sank 3 of 12 three-point tries and hit 8 of 12 from the line. The Tanagers hit 23 of 49 field goals, while Canton was 12 of 39 from the field. Canton connected on 0 of 5 three-point tries and made 3 of 4 free throw tries.
