Public broadcasting will cover memorial dedication South Dakota will dedicate its World War II Memorial on Sept. 15 in Pierre. South Dakota Public Broadcasting will be there.
In the weeks leading up to the Sept. 15 dedication, South Dakota Public Television, South Dakota Public Radio and SDPB Online will set the mood with a variety of programming to honor all of those who served.
South Dakota Public Television
During the first two weeks of September, South Dakota Public Television will look at World War II from a number of perspectives.
Two local programs will air � American Ace: The Joe Foss Story (8 p.m. Monday, Sept. 10) and Pearl Harbor Survivors: South Dakota Stories (7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14). They are among a number of World War II related specials that are scheduled during the first two weeks of September.
On dedication day, Saturday, Sept. 15, SDPTV will offer full live coverage of the parade at 11 a.m. A special, The Big Band Sounds of World War II, follows at 1 p.m. Then, SDPTV offers full live coverage of the actual dedication at Capitol Lake at 2 p.m.
A two-hour dedication highlights program is planned at 2 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 30.
South Dakota Public Radio
South Dakota Public Radio initiated its coverage in July by beginning its list of South Dakotans who died while serving their country during World War II. Approximately 2,000 South Dakotans died during the conflict. Each day, up to the Sept. 15 dedication, SDPR is announcing some 50 to 60 names daily.
Dakota Heroes, a special one-hour documentary by SDPR's award-winning news staff, will explore the state's role in World War II. It premieres at noon Friday, Sept. 14. Encores air at 7 p.m. Friday, Sept. 14, and 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 15.
Big Band Spotlight With Carl Gehrke features the music of World War II at its regular time, 7:30 p.m. On Sept. 14, Jazz Nightly, from 8:30 to 10 p.m., will feature music of the era.
SDPB Online at www.sdbp.org/WWII will offer a wealth of information including live coverage of the parade and dedication on Sept. 15. In addition, the parade and dedication will be placed in the comprehensive www.sdpb.org library, available free to all via computer.
Other sdpb.org features will include links to the state's World War II Web site and information about Joe Foss and Pearl Harbor.
