As we begin the 2001-2002 school year we welcome several new staff members to Vermillion High School. These staff members are: Mary Begley, language arts; Damien Donohoe, science department; Mark Nietzke, lifeskills tutor; and Becky Berry; lifeskills instructor.
As of Sept. 7, the high school has 441 students enrolled, with the following grade level enrollments:
9th grade � 107 students
10th grade � 113 students
11th grade � 123 students
12th grade � 94 students
T-Week has been scheduled for Sept. 17 through Sept. 21. Currently the students are in the process of selecting the design for their class T-shirts. The homecoming royalty has been selected, and we congratulate the following students for their selection.
The 2001 queen candidates are: Meggie Donnelly, Meganne Hovden, Maria Iles, Ashley Thompson, Jeannette Nygaard and Nicole Veitz.
The 2001 king candidates are: Matt Bedard, Eric Dehner, Andrew Knutson, Ray O'Connor, Dan Ring and Thad Roche.
The candle holders selected for the coronation ceremony are Carey Engstrom, Jon Hoadley, Megan Kruse, Kris Hoffman, Alexis Lang, Brett Mockler, Mary Nelson, Eric Rickord, Meggie Paulson, Jon Rusch, Amber Reisdorph and Mark Rusch. The bouquet holder is Deepti Naik and the envelope bearer is Karl Reasoner.
The noon Olympics begin on Tuesday, Sept. 18 and continue through Sept. 21. These traditional Olympics will consist of a number of fun activities for our students and staff.
This year, room decorations will include only man-made products. Parents and community members are welcome to observe. Coronation is Thursday evening beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the high school gym. Following the crowning of the queen and king, a pep rally will be held south of the building with the lighting of the "V" along with a fireworks display.
Friday at 2:15 p.m., the homecoming assembly will be held in the gymnasium. Friday night the Tanagers will host Lennox at Crane-Youngworth Field in Yankton. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. The homecoming dance will be held Saturday from 8:30 till 11:30 p.m. in the high school commons. The community is also invited to these activities.
