Strong play sparks win over S.F. Lincoln by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers held on in the second half to down the Sioux Falls Lincoln Patriots 55-51 in girls� basketball Sept. 8 at Sioux Falls in a win ignited by a strong first half.

The Vermillion varsity had led by 15 at halftime.

�It was nice to see Ashley�s outside shot falling through even though she struggled a little inside,� said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. �Tessa Tuetken, Meggie Donnelly and Jackie Thomas all hit key 3-pointers for us as well.�

The Vermillion varsity held onto the win from the free throw line, making 16 of 19 charity tosses to two of two for Lincoln.

Both teams were sharp from 3-point range, with the Tanagers nine of 11 and the Patriots seven of 13.

The Tanagers jumped in front 22-13 after the opening period, led 32-17 at halftime, and then led 41-31 going into the fourth quarter.

The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 3-2, while Lincoln fell to 3-1.

The Tanagers hit 15 of 37 field goals, while Lincoln was 21 of 36 from the field.

The close win had several contributors to the cause.

�Abby Moore sparked us in the first quarter with six points and Carey Engstrom did a nice job ripping down some big rebounds,� coach Luitjens said. �We had a great first half both offensively and defensively. We�re tough to beat when we�re connecting from three point land like we did in this game. �I�m still not satisfied with our finish to the game. We had too many turnovers and mental mistakes in the second half,� he added. �Fortunately, we had a big enough lead at half and were able to hold on to pull out the win this time.�
