Tanager tennis team defeated by Jim Prosser In the second re-match against the Yankton Gazelles, the VHS girls' tennis team bettered the result to a 5-2 final on Thursday, Sept. 13 played under the lights at the new courts at the Summit Center sports complex in Yankton.
"I was happy with how everyone played tonight. Overall, this was our best effort against Yankton," said coach Barb Rickord. "Under the lights and in a meet in which two doubles matches were rained out, Maya Ristic had a third win this season over Kyna Williams; and Michelle Rydell played her best to win at number six singles against Liz Hunhoff."

Maya Ristic (V) defeated Kyna Williams (Y) 10-7; Uljana Shkarupina (Y) defeated Catherine Odson 10-1; Abby Washburn (Y) defeated Tori Collins 10-2; Lindsey Wilcox (Y) defeated Jessica Leffers 10-1; Jessica Mathison (Y) defeated Elizabeth Slagle 10-2; and Michelle Rydell (V) defeated Elizabeth Hunhoff 10-8.
Wilcox/Washburn (Y) defeated Collins/Slagle 10-3; remaining varsity matches were rained out.
Lisa Doohen lost to Rhonda Kachena 4-6; Britt Fremstad (V) defeated Erin Dykes 6-0; and Sarah Roetman and Deanna Russell had their singles matches suspended by rain; Laura Wilcox (Y) defeated Jenna Williams 6-2; and Melanie Rockne (Y) defeated Savannah Day 6 -2.
Russell/Fremstad (V) defeated Battin/Kachena 6-4; Rockne/Wilcox (Y) defeated Williams/Day 7-6 (7-4) and Roetman/Ramakrishnan (V) defeated Dykes/Otteman 6-2.
"Junior varsity doubles were also very successful," coach Rickord said. "Deanna and Britt had a great win, as well as Sarah and Varsha. Williams and Day played a very close match but lost in the tie break."
