Tanagers win battle with Beresford 71-64 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Beresford High School Watchdogs 71-64 in girls' basketball Sept. 4 at Beresford.
"What a battle! This is not an easy place to get a win," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "Those girls gave it their heart and soul. The key to the victory was freethrows. Anytime you make more freethrows than the other team attempts, you're going to win basketball games."
The Vermillion varsity held onto the win from the free throw line, making 27 of 32 charity tosses to 17 of 32 for Beresford.
The Tanagers fell behind 13-11 at the end of the first period, led 34-31 after the second period, and then held a lead of 56-45 going into the fourth quarter.
The Vermillion varsity now has a record of 2-1, while Beresford fell to 1-2.
The Vermillion varsity hit four of 14 3-point tries. The Tanagers sank 20 of 48 field goal attempts, while Beresford was 22 of 52 from the field. Beresford hit one of nine 3-point tries.
The Tanagers had several important contributors in the close win.
"I thought Carey Engstrom played a key role for us by being aggressive offensively and controlling the boards," Luitjens said. "Ashley Bjorkman did a nice job of mixing up her outside shooting with penetration and inside scoring. She needs to continue to get to the free throw line. Freshman Jackie Thomas provided us with a nice spark off the bench, and Meggie Donnelly contributed with her defense and passing."
