Vermillion varsity soundly beats Cubs by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Alcester-Hudson Cubs 67-54 in girls' varsity basketball Sept. 18 at home in a win keyed by a 25-11 second-quarter edge.

Ashley Bjorkman scored 21 points, grabbed five rebounds and made three assists and three steals. Tessa Tuetken added 10 points, six steals, four assists and one blocked shot.

"Ashley was four for four on three point shots in the second quarter, as the team outscored Alcester-Hudson 25-11," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "That point spread held up to the final buzzer."

The Tanagers fell behind 17-14 after the first quarter, led 39-28 after the second quarter, and then led 52-39 going into the final period.

The Tanagers forced 25 Alcester-Hudson turnovers to provide a big assist for the victory.

"Defense and protecting the ball were keys to the win," said coach Luitjens. "We made 19 steals, and only had 11 turnovers."

The Vermillion varsity improved its season mark to 5-2, while Alcester-Hudson fell to 2-5.

The Vermillion varsity sank 4 of 13 three-pointers and hit 7 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 28 of 61 field goal attempts, while Alcester-Hudson was 18 of 45 from the field. Alcester-Hudson made 2 of 11 three-point tries and connected on 16 of 21 free throw attempts.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual efforts in the win.

"The only starter not in double figures was Abby Moore with eight points, but she also contributed six rebounds and aided in holding the Alcester-Hudson center to six points," coach Luitjens said.
