VHS cross country competes at Mitchell by Jim Prosser Coach Barb Rickord watched her charges as they lost a close match to conference opponent Madison on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at Madison by a very tight 6-3 score.

Singles: Maya Ristic (V) def. Anna Oswald 10-3; Traci Gabrielson (M) def. Catherine Odson 10-2; Emily Johnson (M) def. Tori Collins 10-4; Jenny Anderson (M) def. Jessica Leffers 10-7; Tara Gabrielson (M) def. Elizabeth Slagle 10-8; and Allison Johnson (M) def. Michelle Rydell 10-5.

Doubles: Ristic/Odson (V) def. Oswald/Gabrielson 10-2; Collins/Slagle (V) def. Johnson/Anderson 10-7; Tara Gabrielson/Allison Johnson (M) def. Leffers/Rydell 11-9.

"We had a couple of very close matches that did not go our way today," coach Rickord said. "We need to start stronger to be able to win the close ones. Our doubles teams all played well, which gives the girls confidence."

In JV singles Deanna Russell (V) def. Courtnie Beck 9-8 (7-4); Shannon Ahern (M) def. Britt Fremstad 8-5; Amy Cameron (M) def. Savannah Day 6-3: Stephanie Richardson (M) def. Sarah Roetman 6-3; Courtnie Beck (M) def. Lisa Doohen 6-0; Kelsey Campbell (M) def. Elesha Welchel 6-0; Allison Jarrett (M) def. Varsha Ramakrishnan 6-1; Allison Jarrett (M) def. Taina Hayes 6-3; Savannah Day (V) def. Kesey Campbell 6-0; and Kayla DeBilzer (M) def. Sarah Roetman 6-1; and in JV doubles the pairing of Russell/Fremstad (V) def. Ahern/Cameron 7-6.

"Deanna Russell played well in winning her singles and her doubles match with Britt Fremstad," coach Rickord said. "Savannah Day won one of her two singles matches. Eight JV players participated and all are showing improvement."
