VHS tennis improves in Sept. 11 competition By Jim Prosser With a somewhat chaotic situation on Tuesday, Sept. 11, when the U.S. was attacked by terrorists, several schools postponed or cancelled their extra-class activities.
Madison decided not to compete in the triangular involving the Vermillion and St. Thomas More high schools.
The Rapid City school was already over halfway across the state so with some quick rearrangements the Tanagers invited them to have a dual match in Vermillion.
Here are the results of the VHS/St. Thomas More dual.
Maya Ristic (V) defeated Katie Halter 10-0; Catherine Odson (V) defeated Lauren Herlihy 10-4; Tori Collins (V) defeated Annie Harris 10-0; Jessica Leffers (V) defeated Candice Skleris 11-10 (7-3); Elizabeth Slagle lost to Angela Williamson (STM) 6-0; and Michelle Rydell (V) defeated Melissa Schulte 10-6.
Ristic/Odson (V) defeated Halter/Herlihy 10-2; Collins/Leffers (V) defeated Williamson/Skleris 10-4; and Slagle/Rydell (V) defeated Harris/Schulte 10-8.
There were five singles and one doubles non-varsity matches. Britt Fremstad (V) defeated Sasha Oddo 8-1; Melina Bozzetti (STM) defeated Lisa Doohen 8-2; Deanna Russell (V) defeated Mackenzie Robuck-Walsh 8-1; Emily Kamrowski (STM) defeated Lisa Doohen 8-1; and Britt Fremstad (V) defeated Melina Bozzetti 6-4.
In doubles, Russell/Fremstad (V) defeated Kambrowski/ Mackenzie Robuck-Walsh 8-2.
The varsity final score was 8-1. The non-varsity score was 4-2.
