VHS tennis team salvages 1 of 3 at meet in Brookings by Jim Prosser The Tanager girls' tennis team faced some of the tougher teams in the high school ranks at the Brookings quadrangular on Friday, Sept. 7. Suffering losses to Watertown 8-1; Rapid City Stevens 9-0; but defeating Brookings 6-3.
The competition was really stiff in the Steven's match with the Tanager girls able to win only a total of 10 game points in the six singles matches, and two in the doubles.
Maya Ristic lost to Kinsley Powers 7-10 in a close match and Ristic/Odson scored the 2 points in a 10-2 loss in doubles.
"Maya's first losing match of the season was very close and I know she is capable of beating Powers. Perhaps they will meet again at the state tournament. Stevens is one of the stronger teams in South Dakota," said coach Barb Rickord. "Playing these powerhouse teams is a positive for the girls as they are aided in their improvements of their games during the season."
The only win in the Watertown matches came from #1 Ristic in singles where she defeated Jamie Erickson 10-3, but the doubles matches had Erickson/Meggie Gough (W) defeat Ristic/Catherine Odson 10-7; Alia Clemen/Colleen Woldt (W) defeat Tori Collins/Jessica Leffers 10-7; and Jenna Bakke/Amanda Humbek (W) defeat Brett Fremstad/Deanna Russell 10-7.
"I was especially happy with the doubles teams' play. Britt also played well in her first varsity match. We shifted the line-up as Liz Slagle has a minor injury and couldn't play in the quadrangular," Rickord said.
The Brookings matches gave the Tanagers their 6-3 victory in the tournament.
