VHS varsity defeats S.F. Washington 46-38 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors 46-38 in varsity girls' basketball Sept. 22 at home.
Carrie Engstrom scored 11 points and was five for five from the charity stripe.
"Carrie was two for two from the free throw line in the fourth quarter, which was crunch time," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens.
The Tanagers led 15-10 after the opening period, led 31-21 at halftime, and then led 40-31 after the third quarter.
The Vermillion varsity held onto the win from the free throw line, making 15 of 22 charity tosses to five of eight for Washington.
"Our 3-point shooting (5-13) and free throw shooting (15-22) were keys to the win, as well as our defense," said Coach Luitjens.
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 6-2, while Washington dropped to 5-4.
The Vermillion varsity hit five of 13 three-point tries. The Tanagers hit 13 of 29 field goals, while Washington was 15 of 33 from the field. Washington hit three of 11 three-pointers.
Several individual efforts helped in the win.
"Ashley Bjorkman scored all of her points in the first half," Coach Luitjens said. "She suffered an ankle sprain in the third quarter. Donnelly and Thomas both were two for two from the free throw line in the fourth quarter."
