Jordt named USD Employee of Month Concern for his staff and their needs has earned John Jordt the Employee of the Month Award at The University of South Dakota for October.
Jordt, supervisor of Custodial and Grounds for Facilities Management, was honored during a ceremony in the Statewide Educational Services building. USD President James W. Abbott presented Jordt with a plaque and a check.
"The people I work around and with are fantastic people. They're always willing to put their best foot forward when asked," Jordt said. "That makes supervising them easy and a pleasure.
"The students are a lot of fun, and you get to know a lot of them over the years," he added. "At Dakota Days, when they are back, you usually get an opportunity to see them."
Barb Jacobson, Wanda Jildera, Violet Zoss and Lea Rumelhart, all custodians who are supervised by Jordt, nominated him. On their nomination form, the ladies commented, "?we can count on John to stop every morning to see if we have any problems and how things are going. He goes out of his way to find the answers if he doesn't know them. He's always willing to lend a helping hand if we need it. John treats you like a friend, not just an employee. He takes time and listens to our problems."
"Violet and I both lost our mothers last year, and it was a tough time for both of us," said Wanda Jildera at the ceremony. "John took the time to help us through it, so he's not only a good boss, but a good friend too."
Jordt began working at USD as a custodian in March of 1974. Within a few years, he moved through the ranks to crew leader and into the position of supervisor in 1978, a position he has held ever since.
In 1982, he took on the duties of supervising the Grounds Shop and in the early 1990s began to split his duties between the Grounds and Custodial departments.
