Runners place fourth in state meet The Vermillion High School cross country team participated in the South Dakota State High School Meet Oct. 20 at the Elks Golf Course in Rapid City.
Both the boys' and girls' teams placed fourth.
In the boys' division, Vermillion's Eric Dehner placed second behind T.J. Sanderson of Chamberlain.
"Eric Dehner ran a great race," said coach Josh Roberts. "He took control at the half-way point and dropped the pack of five down to he and T.J. Eric tried several times to break him, but could never open up more than five meters. With about 600 meters to go, T.J. went hard and Eric couldn't respond. It was a gutsy performance by both runners."
Dehner has now placed in the top 20 five times 18th as an eighth-grader, fourth as a freshman, first as a sophomore, third as a junior and second as a senior.
Roberts was also pleased with the entire boys' team.
"The boys ran well," he said. "Tyler finishing tenth is a great performance. We were close to getting the win and ended up fourth. Had a few more things gone our way the result would be different, but I am very pleased with the guys' efforts. This was a tough cross country course and our kids did everything they could."
Roberts praised the girls' team as well.
"The girls ran their hearts out and brought home a fourth place team plaque," he said. "Michelle Rasmussen led the girls with a 15th place finish, earning the only medal on the girls' side. Kati Dehner had the breakthrough performance we knew she was capable of. I'm proud of how she pushed herself through the pain to finish 22nd in a very competitive field. All the girls ran as well as they have all year.
"This was a very good performance for both the boys' and girls' teams," he continued. Hopefully the athletes will be motivated to continue to run throughout the winter and be successful in the spring on the track."
Roberts is proud of his runners and appreciates the efforts they have put forth this season. He also appreciates his assistant.
"I would like to thank coach Marni Johnson who volunteered her time to help me out this season," he said. "I am very grateful to have had her knowledge and expertise in helping the team."
