Tanagers can't tame Bulldogs, lose 62-49 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers were defeated by the Madison Bulldogs 62-49 in varsity girls' basketball Sept. 25 at Madison as the winners held the lead after each quarter.

Carey Engstrom sank 10 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, followed by Meggie Donnelly, who scored 15 points and made two assists and two steals.

"Carey Engstrom really played well," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "She crashed the boards hard and penetrated to the hole drawing fouls. She finished with a double-double. Ashley Bjorkman had a good first period, but struggled to get back on track. She re-sprained her ankle in the second period."

The Tanagers fell behind 18-14 after the opening period, trailed 28-24 at halftime, and then trailed 38-34 after the third period.

"Madison has a nice team," said coach Luitjens. "Any team with their kind of size (three 6-footers) and outside quickness will give us problems. Unfortunately, we weren't hitting our shots and they were. We were just out-played."

The Vermillion varsity made 2 of 8 three-point attempts and made 23 of 32 free throw attempts. The Tanagers hit 12 of 38 field goals, while Madison was 23 of 45 from the field. Madison connected on 2 of 8 three-pointers and sank 14 of 18 free throw tries.

Although defeated, the Tanagers had a number of fine individual efforts.

"Meggie Donnelly picked up some of the slack offensively," coach Luitjens said. "We need her to be aggressive on the offensive end. Ashley scored 17 points."
