Tanagers defeat West Central 52-48 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers defeated the West Central Trojans 52-48 in girls' varsity basketball Oct. 9 at home as the winners led after each quarter.

"Ashley (Bjorkman) had another big game," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "She always seems to play well against West Central. I thought Meggie (Donnelly) rose to the occasion, too. She hit some clutch free throws going 8-8 from the line."

The Vermillion varsity held on to the win from the free throw line, making 22 of 26 charity tosses to 9 of 12 for West Central.

The Vermillion varsity jumped ahead 11-3 after the first quarter, but was outscored 19-18 in the second period and 12-10 in the third to lead 39-34 going into the final period.

The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 10-4, while West Central dropped to 12-3.

The Vermillion varsity made 4 of 12 three-point tries. The Tanagers connected on 13 of 29 field goal attempts, while West Central was 16 of 37 from the field. West Central sank 7 of 19 three-point tries.

The close win had several contributors to the cause.

"This was our biggest victory of the year," Luitjens said. "On paper, there is no way that we should have been able to beat West Central. They had more size, more shooters, and more depth, but we had more heart. It is so much fun to coach a team that gives it everything they have.

"We may not have the most talented team in the state, but if we play together with enthusiasm we can play with anybody," he added. "I thought our bench played a key part in this win in the absence of Carey Engstrom. They came in and executed the game plan just as they were told."
