Tanagers lose in last seconds by Jim Prosser Parkston's Shae Anderson sank a last second jump shot with only two seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers were upset by the Trojans 34-33 in girls' varsity basketball Oct. 6 at the Mitchell Corn Palace in the first round of the Hanson Classic.
"There were really no outstanding performances in this game," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "This was a situation where we were not ready to play. We didn't execute defensively or offensively. I think we learned that without intensity and enthusiasm, we don't perform well. This could be a great game to learn from."
Parkston jumped in front 13-8 after the first quarter, and held an edge of 10-9 in the second quarter. Vermillion varsity had an advantage of 8-2 in the third period to knot the game 25-25 going into the final period.
The Vermillion varsity saw its record fall to 9-4, while Parkston upped its mark to 7-6.
The Vermillion varsity made 1 of 5 three-pointers and hit 4 of 10 from the line. The Tanagers hit 14 of 31 field goals, while Parkston was 14 of 24 from the field. Parkston hit 0 of 6 three-point tries and sank 6 of 12 free throw attempts.
