Tanagers outscore Lennox Orioles 49-41 by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers beat the Lennox Orioles 49-41 in girls' basketball Oct. 4 at Lennox in a win keyed by a 21-8 second-quarter edge.
Tessa Tuetken went on a shooting spree, scoring 19 points.
"Tessa Tuetken came ready to play," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "She put on a shooting clinic going 8-10 from the field. She and Ashley Bjorkman combined for 36 of our 49 points."
The Tanagers fell behind 10-7 at the end of the first period, led 28-18 at halftime, and then led 34-28 after the third quarter.
"It wasn't a pretty game, but it was a big win," said Luitjens. "Lennox has an extremely difficult schedule and I look for them to be ready to surprise some people come tourney time."
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 8-3, while Lennox dropped to 4-8.
The Vermillion varsity made 6 of 13 three-pointers and made 9 of 14 free throw tries. The Tanagers connected on 14 of 43 field goals, while Lennox was 16 of 54 from the field. Lennox sank 5 of 22 three-pointers and connected on 4 of 5 free throw attempts.
The Tanagers had several important contributors in the close win.
"Carey Engstrom has proven to be a dominating force on the inside with rebounds," Coach Luitjens said. "This is her third straight game in which she has had at least three boards."
