University awarded funds to renovate Original Armory The University of South Dakota has been awarded $365,000 to assist its efforts to renovate and preserve the Old Women's Gym/Original Armory.
The announcement was made by U.S. Sen. Tom Daschle, who helped secure the funding which was included in the final version of the fiscal year 2002 Department of Interior Appropriations Bill.
Daschle said the university will now be able to relocate offices from their current cramped locations into the Old Women's Gym/Original Armory and preserve the historic character of the campus. In addition, Daschle said renovation of the Old Women's Gym/Original Armory will improve the university's ability to recruit prospective students.
"This is certainly wonderful news for The University of South Dakota. This funding will help alleviate the severe shortage of office space on campus, preserve one of the university's oldest buildings, and improve the university's ability to attract students from South Dakota and across the nation," Daschle said. "I am pleased I was able to help secure this vital funding for the university, and I will continue to work to improve South Dakota's education opportunities."
