USD theatre department will present play Oct. 24-28 The University of South Dakota department of theatre will present Desdemona, A Play About a Handkerchief by Pulitzer Prize winning playwright Paula Vogel, Oct. 24-28 at 8 p.m. in the Arena Theatre of the Warren M. Lee Center for the Fine Arts.
Desdemona is a contemporary deconstruction of Shakespeare's Othello in which Vogel uses tongue-in-cheek humor to raise serious questions about the role of women through the ages. Vogel's Desdemona is far from the innocent victim we have come to know in Shakespeare's play. The action is intended for mature audiences.
The cast includes Kari Hammer, Milbank, as the wanton Desdemona, while Carin Cornett, Kimball, plays Emelia, the loyal servant and friend, and Anne Redburn, Altoona IA, assumes the role of Bianca, a harlet. The artistic team is comprised entirely of students with William Myers, Mercer, PA, as director, Chad Cable, Des Moines, IA, as scenic designer, Kim Lyons, Laramie, WY, as costume designer, R.J. Fitzsimmons, Lexington, KY, and Brian Adams, Lead, as designers of light and sound respectively.
General admission tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for senior citizens (62+) and youth (high school and below), and $1 for USD students with ID. Tickets can be reserved by calling the USD Theatre Box Office at (605) 677-5400 beginning Monday, Oct. 22.
