Vermillion JV team is District 8 champ by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers junior varsity squad topped the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 42-35 in girls' basketball Oct. 15 at Elk Point in the championship game of the Junior Varsity District 8 Tournament.
The Vermillion JV improved its season mark to 6-9.
Jackie Thomas and Annie Carlson each scored 12 points.
"Annie and Jackie played exceptionally well from the beginning of the game," said Vermillion JV coach Kelly Knutson. "They really carried this team to the victory."
The Tanagers fell behind 12-6 after the first quarter, but advantages of 17-7 and 7-6 in the second and third quarters gave them a lead of 30-25 going into the final period.
"After a subpar defensive effort in the first quarter, the team really played with heart after that," said coach Knutson.
The Vermillion JV connected on 4 of 9 three-point attempts and made 8 of 10 free throw tries. Elk Point-Jefferson made 4 of 12 three-point tries and sank 1 of 6 from the line.
The Tanagers had several important contributors in the close win.
"Nicki Nelson played excellent defense on Melissa Mau to hold her to four points in the second half after she scored 16 in the first half," coach Knutson said.
