VHS loses to EP-J in buzzer beaterby Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Elk Point-Jefferson Huskies 46-44 in an exciting overtime battle in varsity girls' basketball Oct. 13 at Elk Point.

The score was tied 44-44 after regulation.

Ashley Bjorkman scored 18 points. She made 14 of those points by halftime.

"Ashley had a great first half," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "Elk Point did a nice job defensively on her in the second half."

The Tanagers jumped in front 13-12 after the first quarter, led 27-20 after the second quarter, and then led 37-30 going into the final period.

"This was another typical Elk Point-Jefferson battle to the buzzer," said coach Luitjens. "We had the lead entering the fourth period, but couldn't hold on. Hopefully, we get the opportunity to play them again."

In the fourth quarter, Elk Point outscored the Tanagers 14 to 7 in the fourth quarter, and 16 to 7 in the fourth quarter and overtime.

"We were unable to score a single basket in the fourth quarter and overtime combined," coach Luitjens said.

The loss dropped Vermillion varsity to a record of 10-5, while Elk Point-Jefferson improved to 13-3.

The Vermillion varsity made 3 of 6 three-point attempts and made 15 of 18 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 10 of 27 from the field, while Elk Point-Jefferson was 16 of 39 from the field. Elk Point-Jefferson made 3 of 10 three-point attempts and hit 11 of 18 free throw attempts.

The Tanagers had some excellent individual performances in defeat.

"Jackie Thomas had her best performance of the year," coach Luitjens said. "She picked up our scoring in the first and third with a couple big buckets and free throws."
