Basketball team rolls over Mount Senario 100-36 The University of South Dakota scored over 90 points for the third straight game in a 100-36 men's basketball nonconference decision over Mount Senario from Ladysmith, WI, on Nov. 26 at the DakotaDome.
Six South Dakota players scored in double figures, including a career-high 17 points from freshman reserve point guard Luke Tibbetts, who also had five rebounds, two assists and two steals in 22 minutes of action. He hit six of 11 field goals, including both of his 3-point field goals.
Freshman point guard Josh Mueller added 16 points, seven assists and four steals while senior shooting guard Paul Marshall had 14 points. Senior forward Eric Hickenbottom had a double double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 11 rebounds.
Senior forward Jimmie Foster contributed 11 points, six rebounds, two steals and two assists and freshman forward J.D. Roberts had 10 points.
The Coyotes outscored Mount Senario 36-2 in the paint.
South Dakota outscored Mount Senario 18-2 to open the game following a jumper by Marshall. After a 3-point basket by Mount Senario's Keith Allard, the Coyotes went on a 14-2 run to grab a 32-7 lead. A 3-point basket by Tibbetts with 1:49 to play in the first half gave the Coyotes a 42-11 lead.
The Coyotes opened the second half on a 24-3 run to grab a 69-18 lead following a lay-up by Marshall. A lay-up by Roberts pushed the Coyotes' lead to 81-26. A dunk by Scott Hansen with 1:20 to play gave the Coyotes a 99-33 lead.
Overall South Dakota hit 40 of 82 field goals for 48.8 percent, including 22 of 41 (53.7 percent) in the second half. South Dakota hit eight of 25 3-point field goals for 32 percent and were 12 of 24 from the free throw line for 50 percent.
The Coyotes had 18 steals, 18 assists, four blocks and just 12 turnovers.
Mount Senario was 12 of 59 from the field for 20.3 percent, including four of 20 shots from the 3-point line for 20 percent. They hit just eight of 18 free throws for 44.4 percent.
Mount Senario was led in scoring by Keith Allard with 7 points with Dennis Byrd, DeLue Miller, Josh Bernetzke and Phil Jones each contributing 5points. Brooks Charleton had eight rebounds.
South Dakota outrebounded Mount Senario, 66-35.
South Dakota will now play in the Sioux Valley/Wells Fargo Basketball Classic in Sioux Falls on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1. The Coyotes play at 2 p.m. on Friday against Southwest State and 2 p.m. on Saturday vs. Western State at the Elmen Center on the campus of Augustana College.
