Bjorkman, Donnelly lead Tanagers to win by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers overpowered the Harrisburg Tigers 54-37 in varsity girls' basketball Oct. 25 at home in a win carried by a strong first quarter.
Ashley Bjorkman scored 24 points, and Meggie Donnelly added 14 points.
"Both Ashley and Meggie shot the ball well," said Vermillion varsity coach Lance Luitjens. "Ashley's really playing tough basketball. Meggie played great defense. You don't see anyone get a double-double with steals very often. She had six assists to go with it, too."
The Tanagers led 18-5 at the end of the first period, went into the locker room up 32-21 at halftime, and then held a lead of 46-30 going into the final period.
The Tanagers forced 29 Harrisburg turnovers to give a boost to the victory.
"It was a great team effort," said coach Luitjens. "Our defense was the key and we forced them into 29 turnovers."
The Vermillion varsity improved its record to 13-5, while Harrisburg dropped to 10-8.
The Vermillion varsity made 4 of 10 three-point attempts and sank 4 of 9 from the line. The Tanagers made 23 of 44 field goals, while Harrisburg was 14 of 24 from the field. Harrisburg made 2 of 5 three-point tries and hit 7 of 13 free throw tries.
The Tanagers had several fine individual efforts in the victory.
"Tessa (Tuetken) contributed both offensively and defensively," coach Luitjens said. "I like seeing her more aggressive. Carey (Engstrom) got back in the swing of things, too, with seven rebounds."
