Obituaries Dr. Gerald DeJong

Dr. Gerald DeJong, 79, of Orange City, IA, died Tuesday, Oct. 30, 2001, at his son's home in Rock Rapids, IA.

Funeral services were held Nov. 3 at Roste Funeral Home of Rock Rapids, with Rev. Dave Sterk officiating.

Dr. DeJong's full obituary appeared in last week's edition of the Plain Talk, however, the survivors were listed incorrectly. The Plain Talk regrets the error and the following is the corrected list of survivors:

Dr. Dejong is survived by his wife of 51 years, Jeanne DeJong, Orange City, IA; six children, Owen DeJong, Wakonda, Dr. Jerry DeJong and his wife, Dr. Renee, Urbana, IL, Drew DeJong and his wife, Janet, Spring, TX, Dr. Nanette DeJong, New Brunswick, NJ, Dr. Chet DeJong and his wife, Mel, Rock Rapids, IA, and Karl DeJong and his wife, Kristal, Spring, TX.

Also surviving are seven grandchildren, Antoine, Collette, Audrey, Kristen, Max, Luke and Emily; two sisters, Ethel Aberson of Orange City, and Betty Lou Alberts of Grand Forks, ND.

Patricia Madsen

Patricia C. Madsen, 76, Wakonda, died Saturday, Nov. 10, 2001 at Pioneer Memorial Hospital, Viborg.

Funeral services were held Nov. 14 at First Lutheran Church, Wakonda. Burial was in the Union Cemetery, Wakonda.

Iverson-Siecke Funeral Home, Vermillion, was in charge of arrangements.

She was born Oct. 3, 1925, in Detroit, MI, to Frank L. Brown and Freda Myles. She graduated from Bell High School in Bell, CA. She was a member of Lutheran Ladies Aid, American Legion Auxilliary and assisted in publishing the Wakonda School News.

She was treasurer of the South Dakota PTA for 14 years. She was a four star USO hostess during World War II in California. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Wakonda.

She is survived by her husband, Millage Madsen, Wakonda; two daughters, Holly Madsen, Volin, and Carol DeBates, Bradenton Beach, FL; one son, Martin Madsen, Wakonda; and six grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and three grandchildren, Bucky, Jessica, and Waylon.

Jim Reid

Jim R. Reid, 65, of Willard, MO, died Monday, Nov. 12, 2001 in his home following an extended illness.

Mr. Reid was born, March 13, 1936 in Oakland, NE, and grew up in the South Sioux City, NE area. He graduated from South Sioux City High School in Sioux City, NE in 1958. He attended The University of South Dakota, where he played football, graduating in 1960. He was inducted into the USD Football Hall of Fame in 1983.

He was a commercial airline pilot, serving as a captain for TWA. He retired in 1991 after 26 years of service. He was a U.S. Army veteran of the Vietnam War. He was a member of the Walnut Grove United Methodist Church.

Jim and Bernadine "Bernie" Demick were united in marriage on Jan. 20, 1974. Together they were privileged to share over 27 years of marriage.

He was preceded in death by his father, James Franklin Reid, on May 4, 1981.

He is survived by his wife, Bernie, Willard, MO; his mother, Wilma Reid, Caldwell, ID; his brother and sister-in-law, Bob and Sue Reid, Federal Way, WA; five nieces and nephews; seven grand nieces and nephews; Bernie's sister and husband, Shirley and Jim Teegarden, Georgetown, TX; three grand nieces, one grand nephew, two great-great nieces, and his faithful dog, Scooter.

Funeral services were Thursday Nov. 15, in Wilson Brim Daniel Chapel, Walnut Grove, with the Revs. Janice Beadleston and Bill Moore officiating. Interment followed in GreeneLawn Cemetery, Walnut Grove, with military rites conducted by the Bravo Military Honors Team of Springfield.

Memorial contributions may be given to the Hospice of Southwest Missouri.
