Peterson receives NSU soccer honors Freshman forward Kelly Peterson, a Vermillion High School athlete, earned a place in the Northern State University's record books this fall by being named by the NSIC a first team All Conference striker and also receiving the NSIC "Newcomer of the Year."
Leading NSU with 15 goals and seven assists (including two hat tricks) in just her first year, the public address announcers at NSU dubbed Kelly "The Gazelle" for her long and graceful gait.
Coach Steve Kehm who was named Coach of the Year said, "Kelly Peterson is a real good athlete. I think the two best qualities she brings to soccer are her speed and her mind to stay calm in the box when she's got the ball. A lot of younger players might have had a big ego after having a season like she did but she didn't let her success go to her head. She matured a lot through the season.
"The NSIC is a tough conference and to be chosen on first team All Conference and be awarded Newcomer of the Year is pretty amazing," he said.
