Rotary seeks exchange students How would you like to spend a year abroad? The Rotary Club of Vermillion is accepting applications from local young people who are interested in attending secondary school overseas for one year as part of an international student exchange program.
To qualify, a student would be between the ages of 16 and 18, in the upper third of his or her academic class, of good character and emotional stability and be in good physical condition. Most importantly, he or she must be able and willing to be a good ambassador.
The students and/or parents are expected to pay travel and insurance costs, as well as provide some spending and emergency money. The total cost for the year abroad is approximately $2,500 to $6,000. The non-cash scholarship includes room, board and schooling, which are provided by the hosting Rotary club and host families.
Some 8,000 students from over 50 countries take part in Rotary's Youth Exchange program each year. Recently, the Rotary Club of Vermillion sent Anders Fremstad to Germany and is currently hosting Caio Vayego of Brazil. The club is also interested in finding families interested in hosting incoming students for a three to four month period.
The Rotary Club of Vermillion will begin interviews in November of this year, and the Rotary district will conduct final interviews in January. Students accepted to the program will be notified in February and will begin their exchange in July/August of next year.
