United Way Spotlight

United Way Spotlight The list of United Way of Vermillion agencies for the 2002 campaign year includes four agencies that are new to United Way in our community. During the month of November each of these four new agencies will be featured in this United Way Spotlight column. This week's agency is Lutheran Social Service's Mental Health Counseling.

The LSS Mental Health Counseling offices are located in Trinity Lutheran Church at 816 East Clark Street in Vermillion. Services are provided by Mary Phillips, MA and LPC.

Through the mental health counseling program Phillips provides assistance in such areas as marital difficulties, parent-child conflicts, depression, anxiety, stress, grief, work problems, family violence and sexual assault.

The counseling program provides a confidential environment that allows individuals to access and receive help in dealing with difficult situations. Clients are able to express the difficult emotions involved, evaluate choices, learn new behaviors and positive coping skills, and develop a plan which utilizes the person's own resources as well as those of the community.

Mental health counseling services include individual counseling, couples and family counseling, and counseling available through insurance and some employee assistance programs. Services are also available to victims of crime, including those who have suffered from family violence. Additional services include the family violence treatment programs for men and women and the parenting after divorce class which is co-sponsored by the Vermillion Coalition Against Domestic Violence, another United Way of Vermillion agency.

Plans are under way to offer an anger management class with a tentative start date of early to mid-November.

The staff of LSS also works closely with the Clay County Child Protection Team (another United Way of Vermillion agency) and the Department of Social Services.

Fees for LSS mental health counseling are assessed on a sliding scale, based upon household income and ability to pay. United Way funds are used to subsidize the sliding fee scale so that all who need these counseling services are able to access them.

The Vermillion counseling office serves all ages as well as individuals of all religions, and those of all ethnic and racial backgrounds.
