USD student wins crown as Miss South Dakota USA University of South Dakota student Sitania Syrovatka was recently crowned Miss South Dakota USA 2002.
She will go on to represent South Dakota at the 51st Miss USA pageant in Gary, IN. The date of the pageant will be released in December.
Syrovatka competed with other young women from across South Dakota in the areas of interview, swimwear/fitness, and evening gown. She received the honor of Model of the Year and received modeling contracts with Blue Management and Agency Models and Talent, both of Minneapolis, MN.
Along with the crown, Syrovatka won thousands of dollars in cash, prizes, travel packages and scholarships. She was also chosen to participate in commercials, promotions, and a bike-a-thon during a pre-pageant taping event in Chicago, IL, along with seven other pageant winners.
The Miss South Dakota pageant was the first pageant in which Syrovatka had ever competed. She only considered competing after pageant officials approached her modeling agent. Syrovatka was amazed at the preparation that was required of contestants, but found it worth it in the end.
"I never expected to win because this was my first time in a pageant," she said. "If I can do it, then anyone can do it. It was an awesome feeling. I wish every girl could feel the way I felt that night."
Syrovatka is currently a sophomore studying elementary education at USD. She will, however, have to put her education plans on hold if she wins the Miss USA title. The reigning Miss USA is required to take part in a year-long promotional tour and later represent the United States at the Miss Universe pageant.
Syrovatka, a native of Sioux Falls, hopes to promote cystic fibrosis and diabetes awareness during her tenure as Miss South Dakota. She currently contributes to the Vermillion community by participating in the Adopt-A-School program. She is the daughter of Eddy and Donna Syrovatka.
