Gymnastics team visits Roosevelt for first meet The Tanager gymnastics team opened winter sports action on Friday, Nov. 30 by traveling to Sioux Falls to compete with the Roosevelt Rough Riders in the first meet of the season.
With 37 gymnasts, led by seniors Amber Reisdorf and Meganne Hovden, coach Mark Upward has been busily helping the younger girls in preparing their routines in the new gymnastics practice facility at VHS.
It is difficult to develop uneven bars and floor exercise routines, given the limited time available at the beginning of the season, especially for the seventh- and eighth-grade participants in the JV section. However, some of the youngsters entered the JV competition. They include:
Floor exercise Krystal Clark, fourth; and Paige Hunt.
Beam Amy Mart, Shaina Hayes, Kaili Johnson, Megan Epping, Tristen Upward and Megan Deaver, fifth.
Bars Nancy Abbot, Epping, and Tris Upward.
Vault Epping, Bethany Sand, Johnson, Mart, Hayes, Deaver, fourth, and Jadee Hofer, fifth.
JV team scores were Roosevelt 81.6 and VHS 49.55.
Following are the Tanager varsity placers and scores for each event and all-around:
Beam second Sarah Christopherson 7.3; third (tie) Katie Connors and Ariel Hofman 7.15.
Uneven bars first Christopherson 7.8; fifth Connors 6.75. Floor exercise second Christopherson 7.5; fourth Hofman 6.75; fifth Connors 6.7.
Vault third Christopherson 7.35; fifth Hovden 7.1.
All-around second Christopherson 29.95; fourth Connors 27.6; fifth Hofman 26.65.
Roosevelt had the winning team score of 112.6 while Vermillion scored a respectable 102.85.
Coach Upward was pleased with the results of their first meet competition.
"Amber was unable to participate due to illness but the rest of the girls performed admirably," he said. "The returning athletes have a great attitude and with our new practice facility and a desire to improve, we are excited about our chances at state."
