Table tennis tourney is a huge success Athletes from around the Vermillion area dusted off their ping-pong paddles Saturday and participated in the first annual German IV Table Tennis Tournament.

On hand were 36 participants ranging form the ages of 13-65. The depth of the athletes there was like no other tournament around.

Danny Chen won the middle school division over Alex Schaack. Vermillion native and 80's city table tennis champion Derric Iles was once again thrust into the spotlight making an appearance in the semi-finals against a tough veteran and nationally ranked woman, Kristin Kuchenbecker.

Kuchenbecker advanced easily into the finals to face David Chiang.

Moving to the main spectators' table, the two finalist dazzled the crowd of over 30 with their superior talent. Kuchenbecker won decisively 21-16, and 21-15.

After the tournament Kuchenbecker said, "I was impressed with the organization, and quality of athletes here."

The German IV committee is contemplating another tournament some time in the late spring.
