Tanager varsity loses in overtime by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers lost to the Pierce, NE Bluejays 62-57 in an overtime battle in boys' basketball Dec. 4 at home.

The score was tied 52-52 after regulation.

The season-opening loss gave the Vermillion varsity a record of 0-1 while Pierce moved to 2-0.

"I'm pleased with our offense for the first game," said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. "We got good shots and made some things happen offensively. We need to improve our defense, however. For our first game, I felt we played well."

The teams were deadlocked 17-17 after the opening period, the Tanagers trailed 30-29 at halftime, and then trailed 47-45 going into the fourth quarter.

The Vermillion varsity sank 4 of 7 three-point tries and connected on 3 of 4 free throw tries. The Tanagers hit 25 of 43 from the field, while Pierce was 23 of 50 from the field. Pierce connected on 1 of 12 three-pointers and sank 15 of 20 free throw tries.

The Tanagers had several noteworthy individual efforts in defeat.

"Paul Tims scored 21 points and grabbed 9 rebounds, and Jon Brooks also added 21 points," coach Huska said.
