Tanager varsity's comeback effort falls short against Hinton by Jim Prosser The Vermillion Tanagers fell short in a fourth-quarter comeback and lost to the Hinton Blackhawks 72-68 in boys� basketball Dec. 8 at Elk Point in the first round of the Elk Point-Jefferson Classic.
The Vermillion varsity had trailed by 13 after three periods.
Paul Tims scored 29 points, including four 3-pointers, pulled down six rebounds and made five assists. Nick Olson added 18 points, including two 3-pointers, grabbed five rebounds and made six steals.
The Tanagers fell behind 18-11 after the opening period, trailed 37-30 after the second quarter, and then trailed 53-40 after the third quarter.
The Vermillion varsity lost the game from the free throw line, making 7 of 8 charity tosses compared with 17 of 21 for Hinton.
�We played good basketball for two quarters and then struggled for a couple,� said Vermillion varsity coach Jason Huska. �The kids played hard and never gave up. When put together a full game, we will be tough to beat.�
The Vermillion varsity is still looking for the first win of the season, now standing at 0-3, while Hinton is now 4-0.
The Vermillion varsity made 7 of 16 three-pointers. The Tanagers sank 27 of 58 field goals, while Hinton was 25 of 48 from the field. Hinton hit 5 of 12 three-pointers.
