USD rolls to 75-40 win Friday By Jim Prosser Mark Martindale of the South Sioux Cardinals sank a 3-pointer to tie the score with only two seconds left in the game as the Vermillion Tanagers junior varsity eventually defeated the Cardinals 51-46 in an overtime battle in boys� basketball Dec. 14 at South Sioux City, NE.

The score was tied 40-40 after regulation.

The Tanager offense was led by Adam Brunick with 18 points, including two 3-pointers.

The Tanagers fell behind 16-7 after the opening period, trailed 29-21 at halftime, and the contest was deadlocked 34-34 after the third quarter.

The contest was well-played, with the Tanagers committing only eight turnovers and the Cardinals committing only nine.

Both teams were sharp from three-point range, with the Tanagers 4 of 8 and the Cardinals 9 of 12.

�This was just a great win before the holiday break,� said Vermillion JV coach Rex Huska. �I was really pleased with our second quarter production.�

In the overtime, Adam Brunick scored four points and Jared Burcham contributed three points to keep the pressure on.

Collin Prosser stole the ball and drove the court for a lay-up during the overtime period, and David Yutrzenka made two of four free throws to secure the win.

The Vermillion JV improved its record to 3-1, while South Sioux City dropped to 2-3.

The Vermillion JV connected on 11 of 20 free throw tries. The Tanagers sank 18 of 40 from the field, while South Sioux City was 18 of 39 from the field. The Cardinals made 1 of 2 free throw attempts.

The winners needed good efforts from several performers.

�Our defense was led by Collin Prosser with five steals and David Yutrzenka with seven rebounds,� coach Huska said.
